Re-development is the new buzzword in the real estate industry of Mumbai with Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, emerging up as a much sought-after location for real estate development. Under the project, slum dwellers will be provided with pakka residential units wherein private developers will also participate through various means.

The development plan for Dharavi has many amenities in it, viz. wider roads, electricity, ample water supply, playgrounds, schools, colleges, medical centers, socio-cultural centers etc. For proper implementation, Dharavi has been divided into 10 sectors and sectors will be developed by different developers. The total duration of this project is expected to be of 5 to 7 years. Rehabilitation building will be of seven storeys.

According to industry sources, builders and real estate developers are aggressively scouting for land in this crucial real estate habitat. In fact, builders all over Mumbai consider slum redevelopments extremely lucrative and are vying for approval of such projects from the Slum Rehabilitation Authority of Maharashtra Government.

Robert Clive was born on 29th September 1725 and died on 22nd November 1774.
He was also known as “Clive of India” – where he established the East India Company’s (EIC) military and commercial power in South India and Bengal. Clive was born in Shropshire to an old and prominent family. When he was 18, he was sent to Madras as a clerk and bookkeeper in the East India Company.

Commercial and political rivalry between the French and the British in southern India sparked an interest in Clive. He volunteered for military service and participated in a couple of battles. In 1748 at Pondicherry he distinguished himself right before the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle ended hostilities. He was appointed to captain of commissary to supply the provisions of the troops.

Clive set out and led an expedition to Trichinopoly or Tiruchirappalli in 1751. The British Candidate for “nawab” or ruler, Mohammad Ali had been besieged by Chanda Sahib — the French candidate. Clive had only three field pieces, 200 European and 300 Indian troops. He seized Chanda Sahib’s capital – Arcot forcing Chanda Sahib to divert his 10,000 men from Trichinopoly.

Robert Clive was able to resist the 50-day siege until the reinforcements arrived. He began guerrilla warfare tactics against the French and the French-supported troops and soon the French had to withdraw. A truce was signed in 1754, officially recognizing Mohammed Ali as the new ruler. As a result, by 1765 the British had considerable influence over the emperor in Delhi.

Robert Clive’s returned to England and ran for Parliament but failed. He then sailed back to India in 1755 – this time as the governor of Fort St. David, a lieutenant colonel in the British Royal Army.

Suraja Dowla, a new nawab, captured Calcutta – the principal city of Bengal and the most valuable trading center in Indian in 1756. Clive led a relief expedition from Madras in October and by February the East India Company’s privileges were taken back. In June of 1758, Clive defeated Suraja at the Battle of Plassey and became EIC’s governor and master of Bengal. Clive’s new position allowed him to reinforce the authority of Mir Jafar, a new nawab. They were able to launch successful military campaigns against the French and stop the Dutch expansion.

Robert Clive returned to England in 1760 with his declining health. He was knighted, made a member of the Parliament and was given Irish peerage. He had to return to Calcutta as governor and commander-in-chief because of chaos and fiscal disorders in Bengal. He restored order by a series of administrative reforms. He also reorganized the company’s army.

With order restored, Robert Clive left India in February 1767. The corruption in the East India Company remained, however, and the company appealed to the British government to save it from bankruptcy. In 1772, Clive’s enemies in Parliament had built up a case that said he was responsible for the situation. Clive was forced to defend himself before Parliament. Although exonerated, he committed ******* on 22 November 1774.

I am firmly convinced the country of India was transplanted from another planet. You will find no other place like it on this world.

India

India is a country where you will see everything you can imagine. More importantly, everything you will see will be intense. You will not see a beggar, you will see millions of them. You will not see a beautiful beach, you will see the most beautiful beaches in the world. Places of wealth are so over the top you’ll be stunned. The shanty towns of the poor, on the other hand, will set you back on your heals.

India is the one place you can visit and come away completely enthralled and disgusted at the same time. If your idea of traveling is sitting in a posh hotel, India has such resorts but you’ll be unable to avoid the less attractive areas. If you prefer to get out and take in a culture that is completely alien to your own, you will never find a better place than India.

India is really a number of countries within a political boundary. The south of India is entirely different than the north. The same goes for the east and west. If you don’t like the place you’re in, just get on a train for a day or two and you’ll be in a completely different world.

One of the biggest traveler complaints about India is the poverty. In truth, it is bad. There is simply no way around the fact. Whatever you have previously seen, wherever you have previously gone, nothing matches the poverty in India. The shanty towns are large cities and the conditions are less than ideal. To get a first hand account, I suggest you read the excellent book, “Shantaram”, by Gregory David Roberts. Roberts lived in one of the shanty towns for years while on the run from the law. The book is tremendous and gives you a different perspective on the poverty situation. Regardless, you will have problems dealing with the poverty in India. It can ruin your trip if you’re not careful.

If you’re considering visiting India, you need to accept the fact that life is different there and you need to come to grips with this before you go. In truth, India is an incredibly captivating country of beauty, stunning sites and incredibly funny people.
