It's All About Love
2 Timothy 1: 7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Notice three parts.
1) Power/Authority. Power comes through the Holy Ghost by the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the enabling power of Grace.
2) Love. Paul sandwiches love in between power and mind because power should always be accompanied by love.
3) Sound Mind. The Greek translation of “sound” is health-giving, sober, disciplined.
The revelation given to Joseph Smith at Liberty Jail in D&C 121 uses this same pattern of power, love, and mind with much more detail, magnification, and clarification!
D&C 121:41 “No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; 42 By kindness, and pure knowledge (mind), which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile—43 Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy; 44 That he may know that thy faithfulness is stronger than the cords of death. 45 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven. 46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion (power), and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.” Isn’t modern-day revelation amazing!
The most meaningful and beautiful representation in all of scripture (my opinion) of the relationship between power (authority), love and mind (knowledge) is found in the allegory of the Tree of Life. 1 Nephi 8:10 And it came to pass that I beheld a tree (Lehi, a prophet of God with the authority of the Priesthood has a vision given to him by God), whose fruit was desirable to make one happy. (The fruit is the love of God) 11 And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the whiteness that I had ever seen. 12 And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit (His love fills us with love that we want to share or charity)….19 And I beheld a rod of iron, (The Word of God, knowledge) and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood. 20 And I also beheld a strait and narrow path (the Covenant Path which we can either follow to the Tree of love by the word or to the great and spacious building, getting off the path), which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which I stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain, unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world. 21 And I saw numberless concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward, that they might obtain the path which led unto the tree by which I stood. 22 And it came to pass that they did come forth, and commence in the path which led to the tree. (We press forward into one path or another. This is our choice based on our knowledge) 23 And it came to pass that there arose a mist of darkness; yea, even an exceedingly great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lose their way, that they wandered off and were lost. 24 And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree.”
So we have Prophets (Lehi, Joseph Smith, Paul) and Jesus Christ, Himself showing us the way to God’s life and love; we have the Love of God leading to charity in us; and finally, we have the word of God leading us back to God’s love. So Paul put love in the middle of power and sound mind because everything goes forward to God’s love and backward to His love. Power/Authority move us forward to > Love < Sound Mind moves us back to Love. It’s all about love!
