Live In and Walk By the Spirit

Galatians 2:20 . . .Christ liveth in me. . .

Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the spirit.

Live in the Spirit and Live in Christ

Gal 2: 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Brigham Young had a dream once: “Joseph stepped toward me and looking very earnestly, yet pleasantly said, “Tell the people to be humble and faithful and to be sure to keep the Spirit of the Lord and it will lead them right. Be careful not to turn away the still small voice. It will teach them what to do and where to go. It will yield the fruits of the kingdom.” Then he repeated, “Tell them to keep their hearts open to convictions so that when the Holy Ghost comes to them their hearts will be ready to receive it. They can tell the Spirit of the Lord from all spirits. It will whisper peace and joy to their souls. It will take malice, hatred, strife, and all the evil from their hearts, and their whole desire will be to do good, bring forth righteousness, and build up the kingdom of God. [That’s how you can know whether or not you have the Spirit.] Tell them if they will follow the Spirit of the Lord, they will go right. Be sure to tell the people to keep the Spirit of the Lord and if they will they will find themselves just as they were organized by our Father in Heaven before they came into the world. Our Father in Heaven organized the human family, but they are all disorganized and in great confusion now. [And then, finally,] Tell the people to be sure to keep the Spirit of the Lord and follow it, and it will lead them just right.” [Manuscript History of the Church]

Living in the Spirit means living with faith in Jesus Christ. It means allowing Jesus Christ to lead and guide you, being willing to do His will rather than your own. It means loving as He did. It means opening in your heart and mind to receiving the promptings that will tell you His will.

Walking in the Spirit

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

I tell you that you can make every decision in your life correctly if you can learn to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This you can do if you will discipline yourself to yield your own feelings to the promptings of the Spirit. Study your problems and prayerfully make a decision. Then take that decision and say to him, in a simple, honest supplication, “Father, I want to make the right decision. I want to do the right thing. This is what I think I should do; let me know if it is the right course.” When you learn to walk by the Spirit, you never need to make a mistake. [Marion G. Romney, “Seek the Spirit,” Improvement Era, Dec. 1961, p. 947; emphasis added]

Walking in the Spirit means to follow the promptings you receive. It means being obedient to those promptings. It means submitting to the Spirit’s promptings. It means repenting as you need. It means ministering and loving others. It means loving God so much you want to comply with His promptings.

Summary of how to live in and walk by the Spirit.

Paul tells us how to live in and walk by the Spirit.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
